A Long-Awaited Collaboration
After 38 years, how does it feel to reunite with Kamal Haasan, and how have your dynamics evolved over the years?
When I first encountered Kamal Haasan, I was just starting my journey in the film industry, and he was already a major star with two decades of experience. Despite this, he was always welcoming to newcomers like me, engaging in discussions about films, stories, and music.
Trusting a Newcomer
Did you approach Kamal Haasan for Nayakan as a relatively new filmmaker?
During the making of Nayakan, he placed his trust in me, even though I was still early in my career. It was an exhilarating experience that has remained unchanged with our latest project, Thug Life. Working with him is a dream; he contributes significantly beyond just his performance, infusing authenticity into every scene.
The Delay in Reunion
What caused the long gap before you collaborated again, and why is Thug Life the right project for this reunion?
We had several discussions about potential projects over the years, but they never came to fruition due to scheduling conflicts on either side. I felt the loss of those missed opportunities.
Reflections on Nayakan
As a filmmaker, how would you approach Nayakan differently if you were to remake it today?
Honestly, I would change nothing, or perhaps everything. It's a complex question that doesn't have a straightforward answer.
Handling Expectations
With high expectations from your collaboration, does that pressure concern you?
The beauty of filmmaking lies in the myriad challenges that arise, leaving little room to dwell on external pressures. My focus remains on delivering the best possible work.
What to Expect from Thug Life
What can fans of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan expect from Thug Life?
Anticipate an emotionally charged drama filled with action, set against the backdrop of the crime world.
The Big Screen Experience
Given the current challenges facing cinema, what do you believe will draw audiences to Thug Life?
The unique magic of experiencing a film on the big screen and sharing that experience with others is something we filmmakers strive to create.
Comparing Works
Between Nayakan and Thug Life, which film better showcases your collaborative genius with Kamal Haasan?
I hope both films reflect our combined talents.
